Ano Syros is a medieval settlement built on a rock by the Venetians. Countless steps lead to the top, between narrow streets with white houses with colourful doors, composing a different type of city. The settlement was created based on the needs of the era, which were protection against raids and the security of residents. Thus, houses were built in such a way as to constitute a natural fortification.The exterior wall of the house is part of the castle's outer enclosure, which dates back to 1,500 AD.
It is located in the island centre, close to the airport, public transport and the most beautiful beaches of Syros.
The magnificent view to the sea is unique from Ano Syros, giving the visitor the chance to see the neighbouring islands of Tinos, Delos, Mykonos, Paros and Naxos. 
Among the sights you can visit are the monasteries of the Jesuits and Capuchins, as well as the Catholic church of St. George, at the top of the settlement.
APANO MERIA
From Ano Syros northwards starts the mountainous part of the island, called Apano Meria. It is the scenery you see when you arrive by boat to the island. With its picturesqueness, tranquillity and beautiful farm-houses, Apano Meria is ideal for exploration and hides pleasant surprises. The few roads and paths lead to landscapes with great views, caves, rocky landscapes and pristine beaches. Significant is the prehistoric settlement of Kastri-Halandriani, where the Syros-Keros civilisation has flourished, as well as the cave where the great pro-Socratic philosopher Pherekydes has spent the last years of his life.
